Meet Dr. Maddox
Meet Dr. Mary Halsey Maddox, our founder and sleep specialist! She is passionate about ALL things sleep, for herself AND for others. Hailing from Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. Maddox received her B.A. in European History from Vanderbilt University. Returning to Alabama to begin her medical training, she completed medical school, residency, and fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she remained on faculty over a decade, achieving the rank of Clinical Associate Professor. Double boarded in pediatrics AND sleep medicine, Dr. Maddox dreams of a day all people can sleep well.
While at UAB, she also participated in specialty clinics such as Spina Bifida Clinic, Craniofacial Clinic, and Cleft Palate Clinic, recognizing that SLEEP is an under-recognized problem in children with chronic illness.
After taking time off for a family illness, Dr. Maddox opened Sleep Dreams© to focus on sleep education and prevention of sleep problems. Leaving sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless legs to her former partners, Dr. Maddox focuses exclusively on educating families for sleep training, parasomnias (like night terrors and sleepwalking), and prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent insomnia. Dr. Maddox truly loves educating others about sleep and being the parent of a child with a complex medical situation inspired her to provide medical education for sleep and prevention to others in a novel way.
When not sleeping or talking about sleep, Dr. Maddox enjoys spending time with her two children, Alonso and Virginia, and delightfully needy goldendoodle, Gigi. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama and loves to entertain, garden, and do anything outside, especially if it involves whitewater paddling or Camp Greystone! She often speaks about sleep, especially in children and adolescents, and has recently written a children’s book titled “Joshua’s Big Night in the Sleep Lab” that will be published in the spring. It is designed for children with Down Syndrome, as well as individuals who are neurodivergent, to prepare for sleep studies. It includes a protocol at the back for parents to use to also help prepare their children. She is excited to have yet another way to educate and prepare children for health sleep!
